Poster Layouts

These are my final poster layouts in black and white. Obviously when they are displayed they will be next to each other so you you can see the development of emotion. I think that the lines cant just be solid colours because that would look quite boring. Using a gradient to create contrast would be better as the lines are flowing then so should the colour. Also i could change the thickness of the lines to see how it looks. I am going to have to use text to give an idea that its about single parents emotions, i was thinking about using the phrase 'How Do You Feel?' but this is just development.

Back To Posters

Using a layout of my posters i decided to see what it would look like using colour. i quite like the gradient and thing that it works well. Although my final posters wouldn't use these bright colours because the colours would portray the different stages that a single parent goes through, emotionally. i think that looking at the lines and how they curve create a sense of emotion in itself.

Experiment

Here following a photoshop tutorial i created a swoosh using the gradient, warp and perspective tool. I quite liked the idea and thought that i could use this to create my final poster images. However my tutor thought that it looked to computer rendered. I was thinking that maybe i could add texture to it to ensure that it portrays emotions because emotion is a human thing. Also i had problems with it as the warp tool would only let me warp it to a certain extent.

New Lampshade Idea!!

I have thought of a different way how to create my lampshade. Instead of creating supports to hold the paper i could use wire to create a shape e.g a sphere and cover that shape with stretchy thin material. This would allow the lights inside of it to illuminate.

Peter Saville

Below are some of Peter Saville's work, i would say that they have inspired me on how i want to produce my final posters for my 'emotions' theme. The image at the top is really simple and just uses various lines to create like a 3D effect. Below that i was looking at his use of colour. The way how they all come together its like they are creating some kind of mood. Also he uses alot of vibrant colours to really make it stand out.

Poster Ideas

Model

Here i was trying to create something like the lampshade i posted earlier. I found it quite a challenge and had to measure out the lengths on paper to cut out. The paper at the top should be rounded instead of bumpy. I should have cut those pieces smaller in length. Also the middle piece of paper should be the longest piece as it has the furthest to stretch. You can also see than there are still pieces that need covering. This would mean that i need to cut out more slots and apply more paper. i think that this method is very doable. I think i could also create a diamond shape and maybe a box shape. I think that if i decide to do this as my 3D model then it would look good with the lights inside of it. And the translucent plastic.

Initial Ideas

3D Model Idea Maybe?

So i was just looking for some inspiration and i looked at my the lampshade i have in the hallway at home. It had some resemblance to what i want to create for my 3D model. Its made from some translucent plastic which when lit up (as pictured below) looks really illuminated. I thought that if i was to create something like this but place the fibre optic lights inside it would create mood and feeling. Before i decide on my decision to pursue this idea i am going to create a 3D model of the shape i want the fibre lights to illuminate.

I was researching different colour meanings and what they mean in different countries and cultures. I found this quite interesting and thought that i need to consider different tones of different colours, and maybe think in more detail about which colours i will use.

Emotions Research

This ia a piece of work i did for the colour brief. I think that it is a simple design and i just wanted to get the 'colour' part clear.

Color causes more emotion than black and white. So anything with more color in it is going to be more emotional to look at, whether it is the difference between a gold or silver sword, or a gold or silver computer. In both cases the gold is going to be more emotional

Things that are personal are emotional, personal things that people like and that they feel are “close” to them. Things like home or anything someone likes actually. That is a definition of emotion after all, something that causes feeling. So if you like it, it is probably going to cause more feeling. Other things aside from liking something could cause emotions from it, such as curiosity, but usually like is one of the stronger emotions. You could say that the two are directly proportional, the more you like something, the more it is going to cause feeling.

But there are things that people like that cause thought. You could like something and it causes you to think, and we previously defined emotion as feeling, not thought. That thoughts are separate from emotions because thought is a period of thinking. What exactly is thinking then? You can think about emotions, “how did I feel then?” etc. So is thought just a period of increased attention? Or is it a sharp spike in attention focused on one particular thing that is clear? It is hard to focus that much if you are feeling a lot, however. This makes me conclude that there is an overlap of feeling and thought, like a Venn diagram. But there are still parts of thought that don’t have feeling or emotion in them, and parts of emotion that don’t have thought in them. That means that thought requires more concentration than feeling does, since we defined thought as a period of increased attention. You can be emotional and have more attention, but usually if you are emotional you are going to be less attentive than you would be if you were thinking more.

Frank Stella

Here are some examples of Frank Stella's work. His work have alot to do with shapes and colour. The colours that he uses all seem to compliment each other. His 3D model that is pictured below looks very interesting. It looks delicate and fragile while the right side of it looks strong and compact. I could explore ways in which i can make different 3D models to portray emotions, also i could play on the shape and texture.

Colour! Audi Advertisements

This was also done by Universal Everything. I like how the rays of colour create an image. I was looking at different ways in how colour don't necessarily represent an emotion or feeling. But how it can be used to create something. I think that this outcome is very successful and different. I could try to create something like this but making the colours betray an emotion.

Colour! Nike Advertisements

I really like the use of colour in both of these posters. These pieces were done by Universal Everything. The colours coming both of the basketball players all relate to the person from where they are wearing to their skin tone. I like how the colours are represented by shapes or lines. They also have a certain depth to it and also they look 3D. I would like to try something like this and see what it looks like for my fmp final project. I think that this idea is different and would look good for an outcome.

Jackson Pollock

Jackson Pollock, was an influential American painter and a major figure in the abstract expressionist movement. During his lifetime, Pollock enjoyed considerable fame and notoriety. He was regarded as a mostly reclusive artist. Most of Pollocks work involves splashes of paint on canvas. I think that his work communicates emotions. His work never looks calm which could reflect his personal life, he uses a lot of black paint which could represent that he was in a dark place. Also his work looks very dense which mean you can just about see the canvas that the has painted on.

Mark Rothko

I was looking at Mark Rothko's work and how the blocks of colour show different emotions or give off a certain feeling. Also the shapes are not neat but they are rectangular, they look very abstract. I would say that his work is very organised and most of his work seem to be centred.

My Proposal

With the FMP title being parents, i would like to focus my idea on Single Parenting. I will research all aspects of the area but i would like to focus my final outcome on the emotional stages that a single parent goes through. Whether it being happy, scared or frightened. I think that primary research will play a big part in this as it would be more personal. I would like to think that my final outcome would be a series of posters or maybe even a small book.
On the posters would be a mesh of colours showing the emotions of a single parent. I was thinking maybe i could clash the colours between how the parent is feeling and how the child/children are feeling. As the child would not be aware of how their parent is feeling. I could base the whole theme around my household as my mother is a single parent with 3 children. I didn't realise how much pressure my mother has until quite recently which has affected me in different ways and makes me think differently.
